University of Ibadan (UI)
The philosophy of the pharmacy faculty at the University of Ibadan is to produce highly competent graduates with correct professional attitude and skills. The faculty trains well rounded pharmacists so that they can contribute positively to the economy.Students at the faculty after their studies move on to work in the academia, research institutes, industries, hospitals, regulatory and policy making organizations, public health programs. Most people also set up their own firms after graduation.
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
The faculty of pharmacy at OAU was founded in 1962 within the Faculty of Science. It is highly rated in Nigeria and overseas. A very large percentage of Nigerian pharmacists in the country and abroad are from this faculty.It broke away from the Faculty of Science to stand alone by itself in 1969 with four main departments – Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy, and Pharmaceutics. Over time departments of clinical pharmacy and pharmacy administration was added. A Drug Research and Production Unit was also established too.
The departments run postgraduate programs awarding M.Sc. M.Phil and PhD degrees. The staff and postgraduate students are actively engaged in research, and imbibe this culture in their undergraduate students.
This faculty is a model for other pharmacy schools nationwide. It gets its funding from the federal government and also receives grants from private individuals. The faculty is also involved in collaborative research program with several research groups in various countries.
University of Lagos (UNILAG)
The pharmacy faculty at UNILAG aims to train world class pharmacists at graduate and undergraduate levels. It prides itself as a source of manpower to solve problems in the country’s health system and mankind in general.When it was established in 1980, the faculty was created to be a college of medicine. It started with two departments which leaned towards pharmacy more than medicine at that time. Later on, it was restructured into four departments- Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Department of Pharmacognosy, Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology and the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Biopharmacy. These departments have different entry requirements.
Furthermore, UNILAG’s pharmacy faculty runs four postgraduate programs – MSc./MPhil/PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutics &Pharmaceutical Technology and Clinical Pharmacy & Biopharmacy.
In addition to this, the faculty is equipped with competent and learned staff, both academic and non-academic, who see to the needs of students. The faculty harps on quality and places huge importance on research. It is also equipped with fantastic facilities to aid the learning process.
University of Jos (UNIJOS)
There are 5 departments at the faculty of pharmaceutical sciences at UNIJOS- Biotechnology Pharmaceutics, Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Technology and Industrial Pharmacy, Pharmacognosy and Traditional Medicine, and Pharmacology.The faculty was first established as a faculty in the defunct Federal University of Technology, Makurdi in 1983. A year later this defunct varsity was merged with the University of Jos. It went through some changes and in 1988 it was renamed the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Armed with competent lecturers and administrative staff, these departments bring out the best in their students. Each students pass through a rigorous training to become who they are. There are also facilities at the faculty to make learning less difficult for students.
University of Benin (UNIBEN)
The faculty of pharmacy at UNIBEN is highly regarded in many parts of the nation. The faculty is equipped with lecturers who research and publish papers frequently.
